Mmmmm-Morels

Morel season is almost upon my good state.

If you don't know what a morel is, it's a type of wild mushroom.

This is a big yellow morel my nephew found last year.

First the small gray ones pop. In a couple weeks after that the big yellow ones will arrive.

When I was a kid, my dad went out by himself.
Now, it's a family thing.

Me, Kiddo, and Honeyman hike off into the woods with bags and mushrooming sticks and search for the little buggers.

A mushrooming stick is to keep the brush pushed aside as you walk through.
It is also in case one happens to some across a snake and you can fling it with that stick.

Sometimes we get a good haul.
Sometimes not.

I love them.

I fix them all kinds of ways.

Batter fried
Stuffed
Sauteed

I put 'em in casseroles and on pizza.

I just love 'em.

Last year was a lean year.
Here's hoping for a good one this time around.

  1. I have never understood the Iowa mushroom thing. And maybe it's not just Iowa? I say that because I had never even heard of any of this until I moved here..

But, I like that you have so much fun with it. My husband used to love to hunt for them, but he never really like to eat them, although I did cook them for him a time or two.

    Happy Saturday, new friend!

  2. When I was young we picked a "different" kind of mushroom.

  3. Jamie, It's not just in Iowa. It used to be more of a hunter thing though.
It was never that big when I was a kid. Than people started selling them. Now all kinds of people go out.

OT, I bet you did. LOL!

  4. looking at that, I would not had guessed it a mushroom or edible. How have I never seen it in a grocery store before? I love mushrooms.

    Happy A to Z

  5. I don't think every state sells them in grocery stores. I know in IA I have never seen them. Only at farmer's markets and some people sell them in the newspaper.
