Healthy Blog Hop- Healthy Fats

I don't do a lot of blog hops, but this one caught my attention. The Get Healthy Blog Hop is hosted by Alex J. Cavanaugh, Stephen Tremp, Diane Wolfe, and Michael Di Gesu.
It is, of course, today and is about sharing what we are doing to be healthy.
As, I am all about health. This is right up my alley.
I have always been interested in doing as much as I can to be healthy and get better if sick without using drugs.
Eat to live is my motto. I have books of natural remedies and home food remedies.
A few years back, I ended up with a copy of The Coconut Diet. I don't even remember ordering it, but it came to my house.
I looked through it and put it down. Later on, I picked it up again and I read it. Really read it.
And it opened my eyes to all the things that I was doing that I believed was healthy and really isn't.
I learned fat, truly healthy fat is not the big bad boogie man.
We all need fat. It's the lubrication for our brains and our bodies.
Coconut oil is not a bad oil. Sure the hydrogenated, refined kind is. But the organic, virgin coconut oil is healthy.
Many of the cooking oils you can buy today are so heavy refined that they aren't healthy.
Lots of people think I am goofy when I tell them that coconut oil is good for you.
That's OK.
It speeds up metabolism, helps your cholesterol, blood sugar, along with blood pressure.
So, the fats I cook with are organic coconut oil, organic, olive oil, and organic butter. Also, some grape seed oil sometimes.
Coconut oil does not taste like coconut. It has a slight coconutty smell, but that is it.
My husband doesn't like eating coconut, but he eats the oil with no problem.
I gave up canola oil a long time ago. It is supposed to be so healthy, but it is most likely GMO and even it is not, it is very heavily refined. At one point it was pretty much all I cooked with.
I feel better since I quit eating it. So does my husband.
There are so many things I could say about what I do to stay healthy, but that could go on and on.
I chose fats because the truly healthy fats get a bad wrap and what have been taught about what healthy fats are comes from flawed studies.
Too much of anything is not good for you. But, at the same time too little fat is not healthy either.
If you'd like to read more benefits of coconut oil, check out mercola.com or just do a search on coconut oil benefits.

Have a healthy day!

  1. Oil is good for the body - we do need some!
We only use virgin olive oil. Some oils are so processed it's scary.
Thanks for participating in our bloghop!

  2. Fats get a bad rap. Butter is so much better for us than margarine, but people still slam butter like it will kill you. And I suppose it will too, but only if you eat way too much of it. I've never tried coconut oil. Sounds like I might have to check it out.

    1. M.J., I love butter. I don't know why people have to be such butter haters.

  3. I was only reading something else earlier in the week about coconut oil and have added it to my shopping list and then today I read this by you so maybe the mag was right and it is a good thing.......I also prefer butter over margarine and since I don't eat a lot of it I don't think it is bad for me

  5. I am so disgusted sometimes while I try to keep my husband's eating habits in an order. I am fighting a loosing battle here. My two younger kids are doing great. They practically turned their genetics around by eating right. My older son is struggling but is trying. My husband ( we are lucky to have him around) goes off track and then it becomes my job to bring him back to senses.

    1. Oh Munir, I am sorry to hear that. I think my FIL is going to end up doing the same thing. He told my MIL that she is going to be the one fixing his plate to make sure he doesn't eat too much. But, they still keep junk in the house and he will eat that if she is gone.

  6. This just reminded I have to get some coconut oil because all my friends rave about it. I only use extra virgin olive oil and haven't bought margarine in years, that stuff will kill you. :)

I always say everything in moderation. It's all about healthy portions.

  8. My wife swears by coconut oil. She uses it for a number of things. I found it is good to use as a lotion for my skin a couple times a week. I can feel the difference.

And thanks for participating in the Blog Hop!

  10. In the past few years, I've been hearing a lot about the benefits of coconut oil or milk. I don't know if it's true, but someone told me coconut milk can prevent Alzheimer's. It's worth a try.

    Stay well, Ruth.

  11. HI, Ruth,

Great to meet you!... First of all, I LOVED the title of your blog. I made me laugh ...

AND... You are so right! WE DO need fats in our diet. HEALTHY FATS and coconut oil is GREAT. I learned about it last year and even made chocolate from it!

We all need to know that fat isn't our enemy. Neither is sugar for that matter, but it is ALL ABOUT THE PROCESSING...

Nuts, (almonds especially), avocado, almond butter, peanut butter (without additives like salt and sugar... organic) are EXCELLENT sources of good fat as well.

Thanks so much for joining the HOP and sharing the benefits of coconut oil!

    1. Coffee Lady, I still know lots of people that try to avoid all fats and if I try and tell them that some fat is needed they just look at me odd. We know better, don't we?

    1. Stina, olive oil is good. If you bake, it makes muffins pretty fluffy.

  14. I love how pure coconut oil is so readily available now. We use it, too. It has a nice high smoke point which makes it great for high temps, which is where a lot of lesser oils get really bad. I also love Mercola. Great post!
