To Wheat or Not to Wheat

That is the question.
As you may know, or not, I have not eaten wheat in many months.

It was an experiment to see how my body did with it.

To be honest, I did have wheat twice.

Once, because my daughter made something for school and she wanted me to try it.
The second time was just a couple weeks ago.
I made some regular bread for the wheat eaters.

Hot, fresh bread smelled so good.
I ate a little bit.

I didn't feel so good afterwards.
Head felt funny-like a blood sugar spike- and slightly nauseous.

I cut out wheat and the rest of the family just cut back.
All carbs were lowered.

It has done us all good.
We've all lost weight and inches.
I haven't had this sharp stabbing pain in my lower back in months.
My husband had a blood test and they checked everything and his blood sugar has not been so good in years.

Since I cut out the wheat, I have lost a little over 20 pounds.

I don't crave sweets.
In fact, most sweets taste overly sweet to me.

I have pretty much mastered cooking without wheat flour.
I even made dumplings without wheat flour and they turned out good.

From what I read, many people can't have just a little wheat.
They say they will and end up eating a ton and really feeling sick.
So, I have done my best to have none.

I did find that eating that bread did not make me start wanting wheat again.

So, that is good.

I am, however, thinking of dropping my total ban.
There are certain things that I used to cook with that contained wheat.
Like cream soups.

I can buy no wheat brands, but they are not the right size and they cost a lot more.

I am still not going to go back to eating wheat bread and wheat pasta.

I am still debating this.
If it was just me, I wouldn't care.
But is it right to not make this or that anymore because of me?
Not sure that it is.

But, I don't want cream soups to be my gateway wheat.

I figure if cutting out the wheat made me have headaches and be really tired until it all got out of my system, it can't be the healthiest thing for me.

So, I can't eat my mom's stuffing at Thanksgiving.
I'll come home and make some cornbread stuffing.
And it will still be tasty.

I have willpower I can do it.

  1. The easiest way for me to lose belly fat and weight is to go no carbs for a month or longer. I haven't done this in a couple of years and I'm getting that middleaged spread - I have to do something.

    Seems everyone is going glutten free. I really hate to go that drastic.

    Good success on your new eating program. I am sure you can do it.

  2. Morning cup of coffee, I never knew cutting carbs would really make such a difference.
    Trying to cut all the gluten out of one's diet is a chore.
    I never thought I'd say that I don't miss wheat, but I don't.

  3. I will say the past few years I have become more sensitive to wheat. If I eat a lot of things with wheat in them, I feel gross--lots of GI issues. If I cut down, I'm ok. It's amazing the difference it makes. I won't give up bread--mostly cause I love the multi-grain, heavy duty stuff. I just won't eat so much.

    1. Sue, I have a lot of GI issues too and I have been trying everything under the sun to see what works. So far the no wheat seems to work. Pie is what will screw me, not bread. I have yet to successfully make a crust without wheat flour.

  4. Only you know what is best for your body, and if not having wheat is best the go for it, if you want to have a little bit at certain times like having a little bit of your mums stuffing at Thanksgiving then do so. You know your body better the anyone else........

  5. I just don't know how to go about doing this. Is there a plan I can look into? I have fibromyalgia and some people with it swear by a gluten free diet.

    1. Yes, Gail, I have heard that too. I just looked at a lot of sites on the internet. I started off reading a book by the same doctor that wrote "The Wheat Belly".
      I do use a lot of oat flour and some people following a gluten free won't eat it. Oats have no gluten, but there a possibility of cross contamination from wheat when it's processed. Though you can buy gluten free oats too.

  6. These next couple of months are a beastly challenge if you want to watch what you eat.
    But, then there's Valentine's.
    Then St. Patrick's Day baked potatoes and six-packs.
    Then Easter.
    Then backyard barbecues.
    Well, we'll always have September.
    And tailgate parties.
    Crap!

  7. I'm with Adam, got to have wheat and pasta and bread, couldn't live without it, but if it's giving you health issues, you're being smart by eliminating it. :)

    1. Alex, I eat pasta. I had to find some to placate my pasta loving daughter. I've been eating a kind made with rice flour and contains rice bran. Tracy tells me quinoa pasta is pretty good too. I've made wheat free pizza crust, but not much luck with yeast bread. Quick breads I have mastered.
      When I started doing this, I had no clue it was in everything.

  9. Congrats on the wheat ban. I've cut down on my intake, but I guess I don't always cut something completely from my diet, as it makes cooking difficult or impossible at times when it comes to flavor or texture. Over all, we eat much healthier now. My current project is not drinking any more soda pop, especially pepsi's which I LOVE. It's hard. I feel like I need a support group, because even though it has been almost 3 months, I still want to have a pepsi.

    1. Yvonne, you are right about some things being almost impossible. I did buy some cream soups a couple days ago so my daughter could get one of her favorite meals. It's got wheat and I will live.
      I gave up soda a long time ago. Once in a while one just sounds so good and I will take a sip of my husband's and it just tastes funny to me.
