How

How - A one word question.

How- A wording meaning to explain the way that something works.

How- A word meaning to what extent or degree.

How- A greeting from the American Indian to others, namely white people. They'd ride up to you on their horse, raise their right hand and say, "How."
I found this pic on buzzfeed.
I tried, but could not find a picture of an American Indian doing this so you get a picture of Johnny Depp as Tonto in The Lone Ranger.

And I know they are not called American Indians anymore. It's Native Americans. But, they did the "How" in movies and TV and at the time they were still called Indians.

Last year's H- Hmmmmm........

  1. How, Ruth. No, I'm not part American Indian or even Native American. But I like the greeting :)

  2. Johnny Depp looks like one mean Native American - but also a very hot one. I wonder how the natives feel about another white man playing one of them? Not too happy I would say.

    1. When I was looking up pictures, one place said Johnny Depp says that he is 1/4 Cherokee on his mother's side. The major studios must figure the Native Americans that are 100% or look it aren't enough of a pull.

    1. This just in from "Answer Your Own Question, Al": it means "trusted friend" or "faithful scout" or some other such.
I think I was thinking of "Tonto."
I can be such a dumbass.

    2. Or maybe it does mean dumdass. It's just in code and that is what they tell everyone outside the "inner circle" that it means.
      How.

  5. This post reminded me of when a male friend of mine painted his face, and stood outside saying 'how' to everyone that passed by. Not one of his finer moments.

  6. My husband is wondering if the native Americans used the word "How" as a short form of How are you?

  10. Hilarious Ruth. The first thing that popped into my head was "How, kemosabe!" Oh wait...am I the only one who was tickled? Are we actually being mature and serious???

    1. Why thank you, Karen.
I think some people like to be mature and serious. It's overrated.
