IBS Stands For

You're probably thinking it stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
You'd be wrong.
It stands for It's Bull Shit.

It means they have no clue where the pain is coming from so they are just going to call it something.
I told the doctor that the pains started after the last time I tried gluten and they were going away.
But, oh no.
I don't have a degree so I don't know what I am talking about.

It must be Crohn's.
You need a colonoscopy.

They did find diverticulosis, which are weak spots in the intestines, but they didn't find that a big deal at all.

They told me they would never heal.
Strangely enough, I have seen people state that theirs did heal.

The medical community swears that there is no connection between diverticulosis and celiac.
Yet, a lot of celiacs seem to get it.

Right before he left the room, the GI said it's IBD.
Which, actually, from the paperwork it is IBS.

They are two different things.
But, I am sure he knew that.
Maybe he figured I wouldn't.

Honeyman thinks he knows what he is doing.
I really have my doubts.

His whole idea is to put me on metamucil for a couple weeks and call his office and let them know how I am doing.
Gee, more fiber in my diet.
I wonder why I didn't think of that.
Oh, wait.
I did.

So, I am thinking that I am going to go back to what I was doing before that was starting to make me feel better.

I am suppose to go back for another visit in a couple months.
Not sure if I will cancel or not.
At this point, the way I feel is that I have spent enough money on this.

  1. I hear you. They think that we don't know anything. No offence towards health care providers but to me it seems like a lot of time gets wasted because of having to cover their own backs. I wish that things were not this difficult for you ( or any of us for that matter).
Medical science is so uncertain. Things are constantly changing. What used to be bad ten years ago is good now or visa versa.. I am sorry that you got caught in the confusion and suffered. I would mention to the doctor about Celiac patients getting your symptoms.
I am glad that your venting. At least you can lighten some tension.
Your husband is right. Most of the time doctors know what they are doing. I just wish they tell us why.
    Hang in there.

  2. Talk about major frustrations. I love the IBS definition. I'm going to use that somewhere.

But, back you… I think you really need to keep on this and do as much research about each thing you've mentioned.

Also, is there a naturopathic doctor that might be helpful for this? Just curious. Maybe eastern medicine might be where you need to be looking. Lord knows I have little to no faith in the big pharmaceuticals that support our GP's up here. Lately it's all about handing a patient a prescription with the "try this" attitude, followed by "come back in 3 months" - bugger that!

I know you'll figure it out - be patient, and be kind to yourself. Hugs, Jenny xxoo

    1. Jenny, I'd see a naturopath is I could. The only alternative medicine my insurance covers is chiropractic care. The government really only wants you to have healthcare if it comes from big pharma. Sadly, I can't afford to pay.
I have done so much research on this and I feel pretty knowledgeable.

  3. Huh. When they did MY colonoscopy, they found Jimmy Hoffa.
I have to admit, when I first saw "IBS," I thought it was some kind of financial institution like "International Bank of Scotland" or something like that.
"Open a checking account with us, ye wee man, and we give ye free haggis for a year."

    1. Al, I guess they didn't give you a strong enough cleanse.

    2. Seriously, my FIRST colonoscopy was the day after an NFL playoff game (Meaning: there was beer involved). I don't think I cleansed enough, because I had to go back for a SECOND one a few weeks later.

    3. Poor guy. Next time wait until after football season is over to get one.

    4. I did. But, they found cave paintings. Which are on loan to the Smithsonian.

  4. I'm sorry for all of your frustrations, Ruth. We know our own bodies. So many doctors are insensitive, arrogant, and rude. I wish you had a nice one that listened to you.
    Hang in there!

    1. Thanks, Robyn.
I think I should have listened to my primary who told me that I should just stay of gluten and taken prenatal vitamins.
But, I thought the specialist might be more helpful. Not so much.

  5. I'm sorry to hear what a pain this has been. Last year I had a mystery illness, and by that I mean I just don't know what it was. None of the symptoms were things they could measure with a reading or with a machine, so the doctor pretty much alluded to me just faking it, and her 'diagnosis' was simply to come back in 3 months if I was still experiencing it. And 3 months later I still was experiencing it, and her office called to ask if I wanted to schedule an appointment, and I told them to go f*** themselves because the doctor didn't even believe I was sick and she acted like a royal rhymes with runt (no really, I said that and I'm not welcome back in that office. Not that I'd ever want to be).

There are a lot of great doctors, don't get me wrong, but I think some of them shuffle so many people in and out in one day that they no longer care about curing us or even finding out what's wrong. "Eh, this is kinda what's wrong with them, now shove them off in a corner and tell them to do what they've already been doing to treat it, I've got 10 more patients to see."

    1. This is exactly why I hardly ever go to the doctor. They do a lot of that "come back if you are not better". Translation= I would like to milk you and insurance for more money.

    2. I hope you are all healthy now.
